Summary of the book

Nobody Rides for FREE

Between these pages is the true story of a young man becoming stranded in Europe and the Middle East with only a pocket full of change and no way home. Hoping to live on a kibbutz in Israel, plans were forced to change dramatically when the terrorist attack took place at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany. Out of despair, he was forced to find work before trouble found him. With only a wing, a prayer, and a backpack, his life took a turn for the worse. From the deadly streets of Belfast, Ireland, to finding adventure and romance n the South of France and the mystical island of Corfu, Greec, there was seldom a dull moment. To capture the memories, he kept a daily journal of the adversities he faced and friendships he so desperately needed. Even after all that happened during this journey, he never gave up his love for travel and continued onward to visit all seven continents, including Antarctica. Some of those stores are captured in two other journals that were later developed into additional books- CAST IT ALL TO THE WIND and WHEN THE ROAD CALLS.

“An adventuresome, page turning travel journal. The author’s bracing tale highlights how intoxicating and how treacherous life can become when one makes a flip of a coin as to which fork in the road to take.” – Kirkus Reviews

Summary of the book

Cast It All To The Wind

At first, it seemed an impossibly long journey, hitchhiking and taking buses and trains going overland from San Jose, California, all the way to Machu Picchu, Peru. Thousands upon thousands of miles needed to be traversed across third-world countries, where he didn’t speak the language or understand the customs. It was all so different from what he knew. He caught a few hours of sleep when he could, constantly driven by a quest to reach his destination before the money was gone and there would be no way to make it home. Ahead lay desert wastelands, unimaginable illnesses, dense jungles, and eventually the towering frozen mountains of the Andes. Along the way, new friends were made, old friends visited, and a few strangers waited, hoping to steal what little he had. What could drive someone to take such risks, going all that distance alone, just to see the Lost City of the Incas? This is the true story of the common man who was living his dreams, hoping to find himself and visit civilizations much different from where he came. Doing that, he’d find out just how fortunate he’d always been.www.billgirvinwrites.com.

Summary of the book

When the Road Calls

Throughout history, there have been a handful of brave souls who cast it all to the winds and let fate decide what might be hiding around the next bend in the road. These remarkable individuals all shared a yearning to discover the world, not only to find the treasures that were out there waiting to be had, but also to discover what made them who they were as they dealt with near impossible, unexpected, and, too often, dangerous situations. This is the remarkable true story of a small group of modern-day adventurers traveling overland to India from Holland on the infamous hippie trail in a $360 Volkswagen van during 1973. They were challenged by the hatred they faced in countries like Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan—just for being Westerners. There were unforgettable moments sitting on top of their wheels as they drove through the blazing Desert of Death in Afghanistan toward the lush Himalayan Mountains en route to the Heavenly Valley of Kashmir and Nepal. They were saddened by the poverty they experienced in the slums of India yet enlightened by the holy gurus and people they met along the way. From the crossing at Dover to the brothels of Thailand, each day brought new memorable moments never to be forgotten, originally written in a daily journal. More than forty years later, that journal was discovered buried deep in a steamer trunk about to be sold at a garage sale. In book form, it is now ready to be shared with the world and hopefully encourage readers to make the most out of this gift we call life.

He endured torture, war, inhumane treatment and witnessed acts of cannibalism… and eventually fell in love with King Senequne’s daughter, Tepe. This is is the story of Juan’s eventual escape and rescue…and the sacred Vid, the true Fountain of Youth, that his mentor, Ponce de Leon, had long dreamed of finding. Story and photos that inspired the book

In the Summer of 2017 Bill Girvin traveled with his wife to Norway to visit a lifelong friend that he had known since he was 12 years old, Ron, who lives outside Oslo. Bill’s sons, who are avid outdoor enthusiast and love to hike, mentioned to him a trail in Norway which offered spectacular views of the fjords, called Trolltunga. Although the trail to Trolltunga is considered to be the most challenging in all of Norway, Bill promised to make every effort to take on the climb. The 22-kilometer, round-trip trail traverses through dark forest, across sinking mud bogs and ice flows to the high granite cliffs above the ancient Hardanger Kingdom. Each year thousands of people come to visit this destination, hoping to capture a memorable photo of themselves, recklessly standing or sitting on the tip of the tongue as it precariously dangles more than 2,300 feet up in thin air. The moment Bill stepped out onto the troll's tongue he became inspired and knew he had the perfect location for a great story!

Tony Toscano, a sociopath and owner of the van, is determined at all costs to smuggle drugs from Afghanistan. He never tells the other riders of his intentions. Like many others of that day, the young passengers, Murray Delanie, Aeril Weinstein and her French boyfriend, Pierre Bonnaire, are all very naïve to the customs of Asia. They face unpredictable circumstances that will endanger themselves and change their lives forever. Not only do drugs play a major role in what happens to them, but the sex trade of Asia threatens Aerial’s own life.

Story and photos that inspired the book

During the 1970’s Bill Girvin traveled around the world going overland in a Volkswagen Van from Holland to India. Once in India he went the rest of the way home through Thailand, South Korea, Japan and eventually ended up once again back in California. “Yes, the world really is round,” said Bill, explaining how odd it felt to start in one direction and eventually end up in the same place never backtracking. The basis of the book, The Volkswagen Van, was taken in many parts from that journey going overland to India using the same route as mentioned in the novel. While some of the events in the book were true, much of the book was pure fiction. The character names were all changed and much of the storyline became part of Bill’s vivid imagination run wild. However, he does hope that the book may inspire others to seek a little more adventure in their lives. “In the end, it will all be worth it!” says Bill speaking of his love of travel.

Summary of the book

Lucky

In many ways, it was one of the worst winters in California history. The evil, mass murderer and drifter, Tommy Lee Higgins had come to visit Gibson Ranch County Park just outside of Sacramento to steal the lives of the young who had come to play there. To their rescue came the most unlikely of all saviors, a homeless, seven-pound toy poodle named Lucky. Lucky was hell-bent on revenge and possessed the supernatural ability to battle her dangerous foe against all odds and save the life of eleven-year-old Bobby Bailey. It would be a fight to the death born from the endless love of the innocent.

Lucky’s real name is Coco, Bill’s faithful 7-pound toy poodle who is definitely a member of the family. Like most dog’s, Coco is loyal, loving and would do anything to protect Bill and his family. His four-footed friend never gives up and always seems capable of doing the impossible. When Bill first married they lived near Gibson Ranch County Park where the story is based. Those were memorable days, playing with his 120-pound chocolate colored Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Bear. Together they raced through the woods and dived into the water from the high banks of Gibson Creek. While Bear may have been much larger, Coco's heart has always been just as big. Yes, good things do come in little packages!
